Worrying

Almost everyone of us worries. It means we spend a lot of time thinking about bad things and being preoccupied with negative possibilities. The more we do it, the bigger our worries become. We may even find ourselves worrying even when we have nothing to worry about.  Some of us worry a lot more than others; it’s an obsession with us.

We may be feeling anxious about situations we are powerless to change, but also about situations we can do something about. Worries are basically fears and we all handle fear in different ways. The more we worry, the worse it gets, and a sudden rush of adrenalin can lead to butterflies in the stomach, a headache, or feeling very sick. It can become very difficult to get to sleep, because we feel worse at night. While we’re trying to drop off to sleep, there’s nothing to distract us from the worries that may have been lurking in the background during the day. It’s then very easy to become anxious about missing our sleep, on top of everything else. It’s also much easier for thoughts to get out of perspective at night, especially if we are on our own.

Worrying is nothing new people have been doing it for centuries. Even Jesus talked about it. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:25, 27, 28, 31 & 34

So there is no point worrying, if your anxious try praying to God for peace of mind, this  may help you to go to sleep. Here is what St Paul says, Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:4
