We are not made like the machines that can keep going as long as there is power source. We are not designed to carry on indefinitely, our body and mind needs rest to be able to recharge itself. The Bible tells us that when God created man he told him that he is to work for 6 days and rest on the seventh. If we spend all our time working and not resting then one day our body and mind will burn out. There is a old saying, “There’s no rest for the wicked.” Its said when you must continue with your work or other activity although you are very tired.
The phrase was originally expressed as ‘no peace for the wicked’ and refers to the eternal torment of Hell that awaited sinners. Not surprisingly, the quote comes from the Bible – “There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.” Isaiah 48:22
When ever we think about rest its freedom from work, toil, strain or activity. Rest is the cessation of action of any kind, as rest from labour, rest from mental exertion or rest of body or mind.
In spiritual terms rest means primarily to cease from one’s works with the idea of release from anxiety, worry and insecurity. This rest is offered to all and is freely available by grace through personal faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
So if you’re looking for rest physically and spiritually you too can have that in Jesus.
